Why Travel Insurance Matters

SafeTravel, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade's travel advice service, puts it plainly: even minor medical treatment overseas can be expensive, and the New Zealand Government will not pay these costs. It also warns that many policies will not cover travel to countries or regions it advises against visiting, so check the travel advice for every destination before you go.

If a credit card includes travel insurance, SafeTravel suggests checking how that cover is activated, whether it comes with a higher excess, and whether it covers the length of your trip and the activities you have planned.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose travel insurance for my trip?

Start with where you are going, how long you will be away, who is travelling and what you plan to do. Then compare policies on the same points: overseas medical cover, cancellation, luggage, the excess, pre-existing condition rules and the activities covered. The policy wording is the document that decides a claim, so read it before you buy. You can also request a quote through this site; your details go to Evolve Group Limited (FSP711891), who will contact you.

What should my travel insurance cover?

Most policies are built around overseas medical and emergency costs, cancellation and disruption, luggage and personal items, and personal liability. What each policy actually pays, and what it excludes, differs between insurers and plan levels. Check the wording for the activities you have planned, any high-value items you are taking, and every destination you are visiting.

When should I buy travel insurance?

Cancellation cover generally protects you only against events that happen after the policy is bought, so many travellers buy cover when they book and pay for the trip. Check when cover starts and what the cancellation section says in the wording of the policy you are considering.

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

Rules for pre-existing conditions differ between insurers: some conditions may be covered automatically, some need a medical assessment and some are excluded. SafeTravel, the Government's travel advice service, says to check that your needs are covered by the policy you buy and that your insurer knows about them. Declare every condition the insurer asks about.
