AA Travel Insurance: Who Issues It and What the Policy Wording Says

This page summarises AA Travel Insurance from the documents AA and its insurer publish. It does not rate the product or say whether it suits you — we do not rank insurers. The policy wording is the contract, so use this page to know what to look for, then read the relevant sections of the wording yourself.

Who issues AA Travel Insurance

For policies issued from 1 December 2025, AA Travel Insurance is issued and underwritten by Zurich Australian Insurance Limited trading as Zurich New Zealand. It is distributed, arranged and administered by Cover-More (NZ) Limited, and promoted and distributed by The New Zealand Automobile Association (Incorporated).Source: AA Travel Insurance policy wording page, aa.co.nzSource: AA Travel Insurance policy wording (effective 1 December 2025), p.3, 24

AA changed insurer on that date. Policies issued before 1 December 2025 were issued and managed by AWP Services New Zealand Limited trading as Allianz Partners and underwritten by Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company, Limited, under a different wording. AA's policy wording page says the current wording applies if your policy number starts with 8. If you hold an older policy, the older wording on that page is the one that applies to you.Source: AA Travel Insurance policy wording page, aa.co.nz

The same insurer and administrator (Zurich and Cover-More) also sell travel insurance under the Cover-More brand, but AA's wording is a separate document with its own plans and limits. Do not assume the two policies are identical.

Key terms in the current policy wording

Each row is a short summary of what the wording says, with the page to read. Limits, sub-limits, conditions and exclusions apply to every benefit.

TermWhat the wording says
PlansFour plans: International Comprehensive, International Essentials, Domestic and Domestic Cancellation. The international plans are sold as Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip.Source: AA Travel Insurance policy wording (effective 1 December 2025), p.4
Overseas medical expensesUnlimited on both International Essentials and International Comprehensive. Cover is for no more than 12 months from the onset of the illness, condition or injury.Source: AA Travel Insurance policy wording (effective 1 December 2025), p.4
CancellationYou choose the amount of cancellation cover. International Essentials automatically includes $2,000 and International Comprehensive $5,000; you can choose a higher amount.Source: AA Travel Insurance policy wording (effective 1 December 2025), p.9
ExcessWhen travelling internationally you can choose the excess. The premium may be higher if you choose not to have an excess. The wording does not print a standard excess amount — it is shown in the quote and on your Certificate of Insurance.Source: AA Travel Insurance policy wording (effective 1 December 2025), p.9
Rental vehicle insurance excess$10,000 on International Comprehensive and on Domestic. No cover on International Essentials.Source: AA Travel Insurance policy wording (effective 1 December 2025), p.4, 6
Pre-existing medical conditionsExcluded unless the condition is automatically included (a list in the wording) or approved by the insurer after an online health assessment.Source: AA Travel Insurance policy wording (effective 1 December 2025), p.17–20

CruisesFor a cruise of two or more nights on a sea or ocean you must add Cruise cover and pay an extra premium. Cruise cover is available on the international plans.Source: AA Travel Insurance policy wording (effective 1 December 2025), p.10–11

The AA Member discount

AA says AA Members can get a 10% discount on new AA Travel Insurance policies by giving a valid AA Membership number when they apply, and that the discount applies to the total premium.Source: AA Travel Insurance, aa.co.nz

A percentage discount tells you nothing about how the final price compares with another insurer's quote for the same trip. If you are comparing, get quotes with the same travellers, dates, destinations, excess and cancellation amount, and compare what each plan covers as well as the total premium.

What to check in the wording before you buy

  • Which plan you are quoted. International Essentials and International Comprehensive have different limits — for example, rental vehicle insurance excess is covered on Comprehensive but not on Essentials.
  • Your existing medical conditions. Check whether each condition is on the automatically included list; if not, complete the health assessment and keep the outcome with your policy.
  • Activities you plan to do. Snow sports, cruises and some adventure activities need an option added and an extra premium. Motorcycle and moped cover has its own conditions.
  • The excess and cancellation amount you choose. Both are set when you buy and appear on your Certificate of Insurance.
  • The general exclusions. Read them in full — they apply to every section of the policy.

What to check in the AA Travel Insurance wording

SafeTravel, the Government's travel advice service, recommends checking that a policy covers the activities you have planned, your destinations and the needs of everyone travelling (SafeTravel — Travel insurance). These are the points worth comparing between any two policies:

Checklist for the AA Travel Insurance policy wording
Feature to checkWhere to find it in the wordingWhy it matters
Overseas medical and evacuationTable of benefits; the overseas medical and emergency expenses sectionTreatment and evacuation overseas can be expensive, and the New Zealand Government will not pay these costs (SafeTravel). Check whether the limit is stated as a dollar amount or unlimited, and any sub-limits.
Pre-existing medical conditionsPre-existing conditions section, and the insurer's medical assessment processSome conditions may be covered automatically, some need an assessment and some are excluded. An undeclared condition can put a claim at risk.
Cancellation and amendmentCancellation section and the list of covered reasonsOnly the reasons listed are covered, usually only for events after you bought the policy. Check the limit against what you have prepaid.
ExcessSchedule / certificate of insurance and the excess clauseThe amount you pay towards each claim. A higher excess usually lowers the premium, and some sections may carry their own excess.
Luggage and personal itemsLuggage section; item and category limits in the table of benefitsPer-item limits are often much lower than the section total. Phones, cameras and jewellery may have their own limits or conditions.
Activities and sportsActivities list, general exclusions, and any add-on optionsSafeTravel advises buying a policy that covers the activities you have planned. Skiing, diving, scooter or motorbike riding and cruises often have conditions or need an add-on.
Destinations and travel advisoriesRegion definitions on the schedule; general exclusionsMany policies will not cover travel to countries or regions SafeTravel advises against visiting. The region on your quote must match your trip.
Age and trip-length limitsEligibility section; annual multi-trip conditionsInsurers set their own maximum ages and trip lengths, which can differ by plan.
Rental vehicle excessRental vehicle section (sometimes an option)Covers the excess charged by a rental company after damage or theft, within the policy's conditions.
General exclusionsGeneral exclusions sectionApplies across the whole policy — for example alcohol or drug-related events, unlicensed driving, or known events at the time you bought cover.
